Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Information for Authors

The Journal of Occupational Inclusion and Neuroscientific (JOIN) welcomes high-quality manuscripts that contribute to advancing knowledge in occupational therapy, neuroscience, rehabilitation, inclusion, and health innovation.

Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished work that has not been submitted or published elsewhere. All submissions undergo a rigorous double-blind peer-review process.

Language

All manuscripts must be written in English.

Authors whose first language is not English are strongly encouraged to have their manuscripts professionally proofread or language-edited before submission.

Authors are encouraged to follow internationally recognized reporting standards appropriate for their study design, including but not limited to:

  • PRISMA (Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses)
  • PRISMA-ScR (Scoping Reviews)
  • CARE (Case Reports)

Ethical Requirements

Research involving human participants or animals must comply with international ethical standards.

Authors must provide:

  • Institutional Ethics Approval Number (when applicable)
  • Informed Consent Statement (when applicable)
  • Clinical Trial Registration Number (if applicable)

JOIN follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Core Practices.

Submission Requirements

Before submission, authors should ensure that:

  • The manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere.
  • All authors have approved the submitted version.
  • ORCID iDs are provided for all authors (mandatory for the corresponding author).
  • Funding sources are disclosed.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared.
  • References are complete and accurate.
  • Figures and tables are of publication quality.

Peer Review Process

JOIN operates a double-blind peer-review system.

Each manuscript is evaluated through:

  1. Initial editorial screening
  2. Similarity screening
  3. Double-blind peer review by at least two independent reviewers
  4. Editorial decision
  5. Revision (if required)
  6. Final acceptance
  7. Copyediting
  8. Production and publication

Publication Ethics

JOIN does not tolerate:

  • Plagiarism
  • Data fabrication
  • Data falsification
  • Duplicate publication
  • Redundant publication
  • Citation manipulation
  • Authorship misconduct
  • Image manipulation

Suspected misconduct will be handled according to COPE guidelines.

Open Access Policy

JOIN is a fully Open Access Journal.

All published articles are freely accessible immediately upon publication without subscription fees.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their work.

Articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license unless otherwise stated.

Article Processing Charges (APC)

Currently, no submission fee is charged.

Any future publication charges will be clearly announced on the journal website.

This statement can be updated later if JOIN decides to implement an APC.

Plagiarism Screening

All submitted manuscripts will be screened using Crossref Similarity Check (iThenticate) before peer review.

Manuscripts with unacceptable similarity levels may be rejected prior to review.

Publication Frequency

JOIN publishes two issues per year:

  • April
  • October

Articles are published online immediately after completing the editorial and production process.

Data Availability

Authors are encouraged to make research data available in trusted repositories whenever possible.

Every manuscript should include a Data Availability Statement.

AI-Assisted Writing Policy

JOIN permits the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, or other language models) solely for language editing or improving readability.

Authors must disclose any substantial use of AI-assisted technologies in the manuscript. AI tools cannot be listed as authors and do not assume responsibility for the integrity, originality, or accuracy of the work.

Authors, Reviewers, and Editors

Information provided by authors, reviewers, editors, and other contributors will be processed only as necessary to support the journal's editorial and publication activities.

Author information required as part of the scholarly record, including names, affiliations, ORCID identifiers, correspondence details where appropriate, and contribution statements, may be published with accepted articles and disseminated through indexing, abstracting, DOI registration, preservation, and scholarly discovery services.

Reviewer identities will be handled in accordance with JOIN's peer-review policy. Confidential information obtained during peer review must not be disclosed or used for purposes unrelated to the editorial process.

Confidentiality of Manuscripts

Submitted manuscripts and associated materials will be treated as confidential documents during the editorial and peer-review process.

Editors, reviewers, and other individuals involved in manuscript processing are expected to maintain the confidentiality of submitted materials and must not disclose or use unpublished information for personal or professional advantage.

Sharing of Information with Third Parties

Personal and bibliographic information may be shared with trusted third-party services only when necessary for legitimate scholarly publishing activities, such as:

  • DOI registration and metadata dissemination;
  • indexing and abstracting services;
  • plagiarism or similarity checking;
  • manuscript and editorial management;
  • digital preservation and archiving;
  • research identifier services such as ORCID;
  • publication analytics and website administration; and
  • other services necessary for maintaining the scholarly record.

Only information reasonably necessary for these purposes will be processed or shared.

JOIN does not sell personal information to third parties.

Open Access and Published Information

JOIN is an open-access journal. Information intentionally included in a published article—such as author names, affiliations, ORCID identifiers, correspondence information, acknowledgements, funding information, conflicts of interest, and author contribution statements—forms part of the scholarly record and may remain publicly accessible.

Published scholarly records may also be distributed to indexing services, repositories, libraries, archives, DOI registration agencies, and other scholarly infrastructure providers.

Data Security

JOIN takes reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, loss, or misuse.

However, no internet-based information system can guarantee absolute security. Users are therefore encouraged to maintain the confidentiality of their account credentials and immediately report suspected unauthorized access.

Data Retention

Personal information will be retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for editorial, publishing, archival, legal, ethical, and scholarly-record purposes.

Certain information associated with published articles, editorial decisions, peer-review records, and publication history may need to be retained to preserve the integrity and continuity of the scholarly record.

User Accounts and Rights

Registered users may review and update certain personal information through their journal account.

Requests concerning access, correction, or other appropriate actions regarding personal information may be submitted to the journal. Such requests will be considered in accordance with applicable requirements and the journal's obligation to preserve the integrity of the scholarly and publication record.

Deletion requests may therefore be subject to legitimate editorial, ethical, archival, legal, and scholarly-record retention requirements.

Children's Privacy

The journal website and manuscript management system are intended primarily for researchers, academics, healthcare professionals, educators, students, and other members of the scholarly community. JOIN does not intentionally collect personal information from children through its journal registration services.

Changes to This Privacy Statement

JOIN may revise this Privacy Statement when necessary to reflect developments in journal operations, publishing practices, technology, or applicable privacy requirements.
